Sotomayor Hearings

Media coverage of Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings are bound to show biases. I’ve put together a few clips from my Reader that show how news outlets are beginning to cover the hearings.

Washington Post says the white house is preparing for a “Republican effort to portray her as an “activist” jurist and will counter that her 17 years on the bench are a display of judicial restraint”

“Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor’s opinions show support for the rights of criminal defendants and suspects, skepticism of corporations, and sympathy for plaintiffs alleging discrimination, an analysis of her record by The Washington Post found”

Huffington post reports that Obama called Sotomayor to wish her luck.

Newbusters points out that the NYT article on Sotomayor’s diabetes was “inspiring.” They say of the Washington Post coverage, “The Washington Post’s Saturday story on the approaching Sonia Sotomayor confirmation hearings tried to suggest that conservative allegations that the New York appeals judge is a liberal activist who rules with her feelings have been crushed.”  They also report that “her supporters are urging the media to attack the Connecticut fireman in the middle of a key ruling she made that could impact the proceedings.”

As the hearings proceed, I’m sure there will be a plethora of news coverage to sort through and find the biases.
